Sri Shankara Mattham celebrates Skandha Shashti.

Skanda Shashti was  celebrated  at Sri Shankara Mattham, Matunga. After reciting Rudra Japam , the Muruga idol was bathed  with holy water, milk, dhahi and then decorated with silver kavacham( shield) and flowers.

Skanda Sashti also known as  Kumar Sashti is a popular Hindu festival devoted to Lord Kartikeya, son of Devi Parvati and Lord Shiva. Lord Kartikeya is known by many names by his devotees such Kumar, Muruga, Subramanya etc. The day of  Skandha Sashti is decided based on lunar month and it falls during sixth day of Karthigai Masam. During Kanda Sashti, devotees observe six days fasting which starts from first day of Karthigai lunar month and ends on the sixth day which is known as Soorasamharam day.

Soorasamharam is the final and the most important day of the six days festivities. It is believed that Lord Murugan defeated demon Soorapadman with his Vel on the sixth day of the battle and the festival of Soorasamharam is observed every year to mark the victory of good over evil.

On the occasion of Skandha Shashti festival, Sri Sankara Mattham at Matunga, Mumbai,conducted Rudra Abhishekam and  pooja to the idol of Lord Muruga and then decorated it with Gold Kavacham and flowers. Skanda Sashti is an important festival for the Hindus as it is dedicated to Lord Skanda, the God of war and son of Shiva and Parvati. Lord Skanda is known by several names including Murugan, Kartikeyan, and Subramanya.  Skanda holds special reverence among Tamil Hindus and is considered the younger brother of Lord Ganesha.
